Sodium: How Much Is Too Much — and Too Little?

Salt has a bad reputation, but sodium is essential for muscle function, fluid balance, and nerve signaling. Here's how to find your optimal range.

Sodium's Reputation Problem

No nutrient has been more uniformly villainized than sodium. "Cut the salt" has been a public health message for 50 years. And while very high sodium intake does carry real risks, the picture is more nuanced — and the risks of eating too little are equally real.

What Sodium Does

Sodium is an electrolyte — a mineral that carries an electric charge in fluid. It is essential for:

Fluid balance — Sodium is the primary regulator of fluid volume outside your cells. It determines how much water your body retains and where. Without sodium, your body can't maintain blood volume or tissue hydration.

Nerve signaling — Every time a nerve fires — controlling your heartbeat, your muscles contracting, your senses perceiving the world — sodium is moving in and out of cells. This is the sodium-potassium pump, the engine of the nervous system.

Muscle contraction — Including the most important muscle: your heart. Sodium and potassium work together to drive the electrical impulses that keep your heart beating rhythmically.

Nutrient absorption — Several nutrients (glucose, amino acids) are transported across the intestinal wall using a sodium-dependent mechanism. Without adequate sodium, their absorption is impaired.

How Much Do You Need?

General population: 1,500–2,300mg per day (roughly 0.6–1 teaspoon of table salt)

Athletes and highly active people: needs can increase significantly with sweat loss — especially in hot environments or during endurance events. Some athletes need 3,000–5,000mg on heavy training days.

The Risk of Too Much

High sodium intake (consistently above 3,500–4,000mg/day) is associated with:

  • Elevated blood pressure — sodium causes the body to retain water, increasing blood volume and pressure
  • Kidney strain — excess sodium must be excreted, increasing the filtration load on the kidneys
  • Edema — fluid retention leading to swelling, particularly in the extremities
  • Increased cardiovascular risk — particularly in individuals who are "salt-sensitive" (about 25–30% of the population)

The Risk of Too Little

Often overlooked: sodium deficiency (hyponatremia) also carries serious risks:

  • Muscle cramps and weakness
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Headaches and difficulty concentrating
  • Nausea and dizziness
  • In severe cases: seizures and coma

Athletes who replace sweat losses with plain water without replacing electrolytes are at particular risk of hyponatremia.

Practical Guidance

To reduce sodium: focus on home cooking with whole foods (where you control the salt), rinse canned beans and vegetables, choose lower-sodium versions of condiments, and be aware of restaurant meals.

To ensure adequate sodium: don't cut salt completely, especially if you exercise regularly. Season food to taste with quality salt (sea salt, Himalayan). After intense exercise, replace electrolytes — especially if you sweat heavily or exercise in heat.

The Bottom Line

The goal isn't to eliminate sodium — it's to find your personal optimal range. Most people eating processed food need to reduce intake. Athletes and very active individuals sometimes need more than standard guidelines suggest. Track your sodium alongside your other nutrients, and adjust based on how you feel and perform.
