Every moment your brain is active, billions of neurons are firing — communicating, processing, deciding. A long-standing debate: does oral GABA actually cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB)?

Earlier research suggested the BBB prevented most exogenous GABA from reaching the brain. More recent evidence is more nuanced: some GABA does cross, and the gut itself has GABA receptors that may mediate effects on the vagus nerve — the primary communication highway between the gut and the brain. This "gut-brain axis" pathway may explain why oral GABA produces subjective effects even if CNS penetration is partial.
